Why security matters overshadowed AU summit?

Civil society organizations are complaining that security matters over-shadowed issues of maternal health at the African Union Summit.

The theme of the summit was improving maternal and child health but the insecurity in Somalia and the recent terrorist attacks on Kampala dominated debate at the summit.

The regional coordinator of the International Community of Women living with HIV/AIDS IN Eastern Africa, Lillian Mworeko says crucial issues like HIV/AIDS and their link to maternal health did not feature at all in the discussions.

Mworeko says there was no sign of commitment from African leaders to allocate more money towards improving maternal and infant health.

The leaders at the conference that closes later today are now being urged to show more commitment towards improvement of health.
