The UK Department for International Development has urged Ugandan that return from the Diaspora to invest in Northern Uganda since the north has enormous investment opportunities that such people may want to take up.

While speaking to journalists in Kampala, the Head of Office DFID Uganda Jane Rintsul said that in May 2010, when DFID hosted the Development Minister of the United Kingdom, Stephen O’Brien he visited the north and he took a particular interest in the resurgence of private enterprise across the region which compelled him to suggest that Ugandans in the Diaspora should be urged to invest in the region as way of improving the private enterprise in the region.

Rintsul says since then DFID has been speaking to a number of returnee Ugandans from the Diaspora to consider investing in the North and that their efforts have born fruits for example Mr. Kenneth Onekalit a returnee from the UK is spearheading a farmers’ cooperative in the north after being encouraged to do so by DFID.

She says the initiative is bringing together many thousands of small scale farmers across the region and helping such farmers to benefit from improved market access, better storage facilities and the sharing of knowledge on better production methods.

Rintsul says other Ugandans that have returned from Diaspora should copy the example of Onekalit in contributing to the Northern Uganda reconstruction which is being spearheaded by the government through its Peace Recovery and Development Plan.
