Makerere University honors its former Management Members

An outdoor party is a pleasant desire shared by many. With the gently blowing breeze and ample natural light, the setting cannot be any more perfect! This is what Makerere University held for her former Members of Management on Friday 9th July 2010 at the University Guest house gardens. The ceremony, the first of its kind to be held for the retiring administrators, was graced by Mrs. Elizabeth Gabona who represented the Ministry of Education and Sports, the outgoing and current Members of Management, The Guild President, among other dignitaries.

Retiring Members of Management who were honored included the immediate former Vice-Chancellor-Professor Livingstone S. Luboobi, Dean of Students-Mr. John Ekudu Adoku and Academic Registrar-Mr. Amos Olal Odur. Others were former University Secretary-Mr. Sam Akorimo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Administration) Professor David Justin Bakibinga, and University Bursar Mr. Ben K. Byambabazi.

During the ceremony speaker after speaker spoke in appreciation of the out going management team for having served Makerere diligently and tirelessly.
“Some of them have served Makerere for over thirty years and others for over twenty years” remarked Professor Baryamureeba. “Some others have admitted to serving in spirit, for even before they joined Makerere University, they dreamt of serving here, and once here, they gave it their best” he added humorously.

Mrs. Gabona in her speech commended the ex-officials for their altruistic service to Makerere, specifically pointing out Professor Luboobi’s initiative, The Makerere University Private Sector Forum. She also rooted for the establishment of a retirement scheme as away of bidding farewell to retiring staff members.

The climax of the evening was during the prize giving ceremony, where all the honoraries each took home a Fresian cow among other accolades.

Professor Livingstone S. Luboobi, who had served Makerere University since 1969 in different capacities and as Vice-Chancellor from 2004-2009, was succeeded by Professor Venansius Baryamureeba; Professor David Justin Bakibinga Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Administration) 2004-2009 passed the baton to Dr. S.S. Tickodri-Togboa; University Secretary Mr. Sam Akorimo was the forerunner to Mr. Kahundha-Muhwezi; and the University Bursar who had served in that position from 1989 to his retirement in 2009, Mr. Ben K. Byambabazi was succeeded by Mr. Joshua Karamagi.

The Academic Registrar Mr. Amos Olal Odur (2004-2009), passed the torch to Mr. Alfred Masikye Namoah, and the dean of student Mr. John Ekudu-Adoku (1995 until July 2010) was succeeded by Mr. Cyriaco M. Kabagambe.
