Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has fulfilled the pledge of an official vehicle he made to the omusinga of Rwenzururu, Charles Wesly Mumbere Iremangoma during his official coronation on October 16th 2009.

The Minister of Gender Labour and Social Development, Gabriel Opio today handed over the official car and an escort double cabin for the Iremangoma, the king of Bakonzo and Bamba.

The vehicles were received by the Prime Minister of Rwenzurur Constantine Bwanbale who thanked the government for recognizing and facilitating the new kingdom of Rwenzururu.

Minister Opio said the government is committed to helping cultural leaders in Uganda in their day to day lives and to facilitate their activities since the cultural leaders do not have official sources of income other than funding from government.

President Museveni who was the chief guest at Mumbere’s coronation last year ordered the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development to work with the ministry of Finance to get a vehicle for Iremangoma Mumbere and to ensure he is facilitated like the other 10 recognized cultural leaders.

Opio said the two vehicles, a Land cruiser and a double-cabin pickup cost the government 188 million shillings and 150 million shillings respectively. He says the government has given the cars to recognised traditional leaders to ease their work and mobilise their communities for economic development as stipulated in Article 246 of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution.

Mumbere is the son of Isaya Mukirania Kibanzanga, the leader of the Rwenzuru Freedom Fight that sought independence from Tooro under whose control the British Colonialists had put the Bakonzo and Bamaba.

Mumbere 53 is the 11th cultural leader in Uganda recognized by the government including Omukama of Tooro Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, Omukama of Bunyoro, Solom Gafabusa Iguru I, Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, the Kyabazinga of Busoga (still being contested), the Emorimor of Teso Augustine Osuban, the cultural leader of Acholi, Rwot Acan Acana, the cultural leaders of Alur, Japadola and the Kamuswaga of Kooki. Recognized leaders get official vehicles, officla escort vehicle and escorts from the government and 5 million shillings monthly facilitation for the king.
