PhD Scholarship in Neuroscience at The Innsbruck Medical University, Austria

The Innsbruck Medical University, located in Tyrol (Austria) seeks talented and committed young researchers for its PhD Program “Signal Processing in Neurons” (SPIN).

Positions are available for 3 years and include intensive training in translational research in neuroscience, lab rotations in the twelve participating laboratories, free access to core facilities, a SPIN-specific training and mentoring program, career development and funding for research. The program offers an highly interdisciplinary research environment including Clinical Neurobiology, Genomics and RNomics, Molecular and Cellular Neuropharmacology, Neuroanatomy, Neurobiochemistry, Immunology/Neuroimmunology, Molecular Neurobiology, Pharmacy and Neurophysiology.

Five positions are presently open with appointment beginning February/March 2011 in the areas: “Trafficking and function of metabotropic glutamate receptors at GABAergic synapses” (F. Ferraguti), “Regulation of nociceptors by matrix related molecules” (M. Kress), “Mechanisms of neuronal degeneration in multiple sclerosis” (M. Reindl), “Inter- and intracellular signal processing in pathways involved in acquisition, reorientation and extinction of addiction-associated behaviour” (A. Saria) and “Function of endogenous opioids in epilepsy and emotional control” (C. Schwarzer). However, students with interests in other topics covered by the program are also invited to apply.

Conditions of eligibility and selection process:
Master degree (or its equivalent) in the subjects mentioned above; good written and oral skills in English. Selection occurs on the basis of information submitted in the application, a web-based questionnaire and a personal on-site interview (scheduled for December 2010).

Salary: EUR 1.851,10 gross income per month, 25 vacation days, health insurance.
