NRM supports threaten to cross to opposition over lack of flag bearer elections

Thousands of National Resistance Movement supporters in Kigorobya Sub County have threatened to defect from the party over failure to let them participate in electing their party flag bearers.

This comes after the National resistance movement party flag bears election which was supposed to be conducted last Friday flopped for the fourth time.

Kigorobya Sub County has never participated into the National resistance movement party flag bearer election.

The postponement come after the residents boycotted the elections after they found that the electoral materials for  party MPs candidates were missing prompting the district NRM office to postpone the election.

The resident accuses the office of the returning officer to be behind the plan declare the results for the Member of the parliament of Bugahya consistency without considering them.

The residents claimed the move is intended to have the incumbent candidate James Kiiza Rwebembera declared the party flag bearer for Bugahya MP.

According to the officer of the returning officer, there are 200,000 NRM electrolytes in Kigorobya Sub County.

According to the resident this can reverse the current candidate results for Bugahya consistency if they are allowed to vote.

Peter Bananuka a stronger movement party supporter in Kigorobya trading centre said the NRM should give them chance to participate in voting the party flag bearers if the party is to remain strong rooted in the area.

The residents say they have spent time on several occasions turning up to vote only to be told the elections were postponed.

They are especially incensed that the office of the retuning officer has never gone to their area to explain clearly about the fate of their stand in the elections.

Peter Gakwonka the Ndaragi Two village presiding officer said the office of the returning officer has never bothered to give green light about the matter.

The residents claimed their candidates are likely to lose out nominations for electoral commission as scheduled because they are not reorganized as flag bearers.

Grace Birungi a party supporter said has been supporting James Mugenyi Kirirti as the party flag bearer for Bugahya member of parliament  but she does not know whether he picked electoral commission nominations or not.

Richard Kusiima from Ndaiga said the chairman for the party at the district and nationally should intervene and clarify on the matter.

The residents announced a three day ultimatum to the to the office of the returning officer to have organised for the election or else they join and support opposition in the 2011 general elections.

But Kiiza Rujumba the district party returning officer however called for calm adding the postponement in the election for Kigorobya was a national issue.

He said the matter is being handled by the national office and elections are likely to be conducted on Tuesday or Thursday this week.
