General Elections in the United Republic of Tanzania – Interim Statement by EAC Election observers

The East African Community, at the invitation of National Electoral Commission of Tanzania, deployed an Observer Mission to the General elections held on Sunday 31st October 2010. The Mission was led by Hon. Abdul Karim Harelimana, a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly from the Republic of Rwanda. The Mission comprised of fifteen observers drawn from the East African Community Partner States of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

The Observers were composed of Members of the East African Legislative Assembly, Members of National Parliaments, officials from the Electoral and Human Rights Commissions and the EAC Secretariat staff. The Mission arrived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 24th October 2010 and observed the last phase of the electoral campaigns, the voting and tabulation of results in both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.

The EAC Observer Mission has made the assessment of the electoral process in the United Republic of Tanzania and its preliminary findings and recommendations are presented in this interim statement. The Mission will produce a comprehensive and final report on the entire general election process in due course.
