Makerere University Students seek legal help over impending lecturers strike

Makerere University Young Democrats have petitioned to Kampala central Member of Parliament Erias Lukwago to intervene and help stop the impending strike by lecturers.

The students led by their chairperson Anthony Wandeba are asking the legislator who is also a legal expert to take action against the university over the strike.

The lecturers of Makerere University have threatened to lay down their tools if their current stand of National Insurance Corperation over pension payments is not resolved by the end of this month.

The academic staff association chairman Dr. Tongo Odoyi says the government should ensure that NIC has their 17 billion shillings cleared before the end of November.

NIC has however maintained it recognises only 13 billion causing outrage among members of MUASA who have twice laid down their tools over the matter.

However students say it is unfair for the lecturers to punish the students community over a misunderstanding the university is having with NIC. Both NIC and Makerere and government owned institutions but purely independently run.

The students are now seeking legal assistance to see that their studies and their examination time table which runs from November is not disrupted by the impending strike of MUASA.
