How US President Obama will fight Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army Rebels of Joseph Kony

The days of the Lords Resistance Army and its leader Joseph Kony may be numbered. The United States government has laid forth a strategy to fight and defeat Uganda’s Lords Resistance Army rebels who have terrorised Uganda and neighbouring countries for over 26 years.

President Barrack Obama has presented to Congress a the plan to disarm LRA in response to the White House strategy to respond to the law proposed by president barrack Obama that was passed two weeks ago.

Obama offered his four-point strategy for disarming the rebels to the US Congress in a letter dated November 24 2010 to senators and representatives yesterday entitled “Letter from the President on the Strategy to Support the Disarmament of the Lord’s Resistance Army”.

The plan is aimed at defusing the escalation bloodshed in northern Uganda, southern Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central Africa Republic by removing the LRA’s leader, Joseph Kony.

In his letter, the president said the strategic plan aimed at mitigate and eliminate the threat to civilians and regional stability posed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

The strategy has four objectives that support regional and multilateral efforts:  (a) increase protection of civilians; (b) apprehend or remove from the battlefield Joseph Kony and senior commanders; (c) promote the defection, disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of remaining LRA fighters; and (d) increase humanitarian access and provide continued relief to affected communities.

According to the former US deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs, while featuring on the BBC African network said “You’re not going to see US boots on the ground but I think you’re going to see the US being a partner in many other ways”

Kony has been wanted by the international criminal court over the war crimes and crimes but has remained elusive. He refused to sign a peace agreement with the government of Uganda in 2006 until the ICC indictments are lifted, and his rebels shifted to Sudan, DRC and CAR where they have continued to terrorize people there.
