Fireworks in Kampala as Ugandans mark New Year

Despite threats of terrorist attacks, Ugandans turned up in big numbers to mark the beginning of 2011 in different public venues in Kampala.

New year music shows were held in different parts of Kampala and Entebbe, while thousands gathered at Serena and Sheraton Hotels for the usual end of year fireworks.

At exactly 12am Saturday, Kampala’s skyline was full of fireworks as the country joined early celebrants Australia, New Zealand, Kiritimati Islan among others.

Many people ululated congratulating each other for making it to 2011 as each celebrated in their own way for finalizing 2011, a year in which Uganda witnessed many challenges, especially the July 11th 2010 terrorist attacks that killed at least 80 people, the Bududa landslides and the burning of Kasubi tombs among others.

But Ugandans can now look to better fortunes in the New Year, especially as they prepare to elect new leaders in the 2011 general elections.
