EAC, COMESA, IGAD Uganda Election observers call for peace during and after elections

Uganda 2011  General Elections observers are urging all players in Uganda’s politics to ensure peace prevails during and after elections set for February 18th.

The observers from East African community, COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa), IGAD (Inter Governmental Authority on Development) are in the country and have today held talks with the Uganda Electoral Commission.

The head of the observers and deputy secretary general of the East African community Beatrice Kiraso under scored the need to uphold democracy and the rule of law.

Kiraso says peace and stability are essential for re-attainment of political freedom and peaceful federation in the region.

She further says an advanced team for the joint observation team is soon to arrive in the country and will commence their work on 8th of February 2011.

However the commission’s chairperson Eng. Badru Kigundu has cautioned them to work and observe guidelines set by the Electoral Commission.
