Bulisa MP Stephen Mukitale Arrested for breaching electoral laws

Bulisa country Member of Parliament Stephen Mukitale Birahwa was on Sunday arrested while other two independent candidates survived the arrest after they were found carrying out campaign rallies beyond the regulatory time.

The Police Mukitale was arrested at around 9:00pm while campaigning at Akibo trading centre in Buliisa district on Sunday night.

Ibrahim Saiga the Buliisa district police commander said police wanted to arrest two other area candidates who were also campaigning at night but took off.

He identified them as Wandera Atuhairwe the LC5aspirant candidate on independent and Norah Bigirwa the aspiring district women Member of Parliament as an independent.

He said Mukitale and Norah Bigirwa were found campaigning beyond the electoral time while at Akibo trading centre but on reaching the scene, Norah managed to escape while Mukitale was arrested.

Saiga said Wandera was found campaigning at Ajigo Ngwedo but realizing that police had reached the scene, he also took off.

He said the candidates were campaigning at around 9:00pm which contravenes the legal campaign by the electoral commission that allows them to stop at exactly 6:00om.

Saiga said the MP was however interrogated and released at around 11:00pm on police bond after giving a statement. Efforts to get a comment from Birahwa were fruitless by press time.

Parliamentary and presidential campaigns are ending on Wednesday before the Friday February 18th voting date.
