Makerere’s Constituent Colleges Named as oldest University adopts new system

With effect from July 2011, Makerere University will run as a collegiate institution with eight colleges being established to replace the Faculties under which students used to be admitted.

The College of Natural Sciences (CONAS), College of Business and Management Sciences (COBAMS), College of Computing and Information Sciences (COCIS), College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), College of Education and External Studies (COEES) and the College of Health Sciences (CHAS) have been named to constitute all the academic units of the University.

According to the University key document guiding formation of Colleges, a college is a constituent unit of the university which enjoys administrative, academic and financial semi autonomous status while a school is an academic unit of a college engaged in teaching, learning, research and knowledge transfer partnerships. An institute is a unit of a college which is exclusively research based as opposed to a centre which is a unit of a college, largely focused on service and knowledge transfer partnerships.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Venancious Baryamureba says the move to a collegiate institution will improve teaching and learning effectiveness at Makerere. He says it is part of the University 10 year strategic plan which will allow for better human and other resource utilization by the University’s academic units.

The new arrangement has maintained two School, the School of Veterinary Medicine that will fall under the College of Health Sciences while the School of Law will be under the College of Business and Management Sciences.

Prof. Baryamureba told Journalists on Monday that makerere is hopeful that the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) will approve the proposed changes.

NCHE head Prof Bbosa Lutalo is expected to present their decision after leading a seven-day visitation to determine the University’s readiness for the collegiate formation.
