Uganda Police Officers escape condemnation over brutal treatment of opposition

Members of Parliament from the ruling national Resistance Movement party have rejected a demand by the opposition mps to have police officer Arinaitwe Gilbert and Kampala metropolitan regional police commander Kampala Grace Turyagumanawe to be prosecuted for their action during the violent arrest of Forum for Democrat Change President, Dr. Kizza Besigye.

The NRM side also refused the proposal by the opposition to have all the people who were arrested during the walk to work demonstrations released unconditionally.

The Parliament on Friday finally resolved that government takes practical steps to intervene and manage the current inflation and report to parliament and the nation within two weeks.

The MPs also resolved that government investigate use of excessive force by police and security agent’s and disciplinary action be taken on those found guilt within three months.

Parliament also resolved that government, leaders of political parties and pressure groups exercise restraint, take appropriate measures to ensure that there is no violence  and looting properties during peaceful protests.
