Kenyan parliament in hot debate over blocking Dr. Besigye’s flight

The Kenya parliament has blamed the government of Kenya for blocking the flight of the Ugandan Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President, Retired Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye back to his country Uganda.

Besigye, who has been in Kenya for a two-week treatment was suddenly stopped today morning from boarding the Kenyan Airways, saying it was a directive from Uganda that the aircraft would not be allowed landing at Entebbe airport.

The Kenyan MP Charles Kilonzo told the parliament that the Kenyan government has no powers to use an informal way to detain Besigye over Ugandan issues.

The legislators have asked the government of Kenya to refrain from interfering in foreign matters as it can cause a security threat to the country.

Dr. Besigye has been in Kenya for treatment of sight and body problems he suffered after the Uganda’s security personnel sprayed him with pepper on April 28 in the walk to work protest against the rising cost of living.

Up to late yesterday, the government and the FDC party officials were preparing how Dr. Besigye would be welcomed on May 11 without causing commotion in Kampala.

The government of Uganda is in fear that if Besigye comes before the swearing-in ceremony of President Museveni on May 12, there would be riots from his supporters that would cause insecurity to the invited heads of state and other dignitaries.

However, MP Christopher Kibanzanga (FDC) says that the party office is organizing to ensure that Besigye is jetted in today by the United Nations aircraft.
