Government sues former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya

Hardly a fortnight since the former Vice President, Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya was replaced by the former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Sekandi, the government has opened various cases against him (Bukenya).

Prof. Bukenya was summoned on May 30 by the Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate grade one, Sarah Langa to appear in court on June 16. He was summoned jointly with Motor Care Uganda Ltd.

Bukenya is accused for abuse of office and fraudulently awarding contracts for the purchase of 80 BMW vehicles that were used by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) officials in November 2007.

Sydney Asubo, the Legal officer from the Inspector General of Government’s office told court that Bukenya connived with Motor Care Uganda to fraudulently award contracts to supply the vehicles.

The prosecution side also alleges that Bukenya never used the right procedures in awarding the contracts as stipulated in the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Act.

Meanwhile, the Professor is still answering cases of election irregularities and bribing of the voters in the February 18 Parliamentary election where he emerged a winner of the Busiro North constituency MP seat. The case was filed by his opponent Hussein Kasta Bukenya.

Last week, Prof. Bukenya told the media that his dropout from cabinet was due to the party’s (NRM) in-fight politics.
