Land wrangles between Kasese Basongola and Bakonzo resumes

Land wrangles between Basongola pastoralists and Bakonzo cultivators in Kasese have resurfaced.

Trouble stemmed from cattle herdsmen who raided a maize gardens belonging to the farmers in Kabukolo village Karusendara sub-County and slashed them down.

About 5 acres of maize, 1cre of Banana plantations and ½ acre of ground nuts were uprooted. The destroyed gardens belong to Mary Mbamburu, Herizona Muhindo, and Alex Oneno of Kabukero village.

The disputed land was gazatted as a boundary separating the Bakonzo and Basongola but later the land was allocated to farmers.

During the 2007 resettlement of Basongola pastoralists both parties were a portioned land from Mubuku prison land with a ratio of 3-1 but cultivators have since accused the Basongola of encroaching on their land leading fight and lose of lives.
