Ugandans warned against wedding in unregistered churches

The Government has warned the married couples who are wedding in unregistered churches to validate their church marriages.

The Acting Registrar General Kyomuhendo Besereko said that all marriages conducted in unregistered churches are illegal and if are challenged the marriage can be at risk because such marriages are not reorganized by the law governing marriage.

He made the remarks while addressing a workshop on registration of marriages and compliance with the laws on marriage for Religious leaders in central Region held at Hotel Africana.

He said that most of the affected churches and couples are those who wedded in Born Again churches.

He said that those churches and clergymen conducting marriages ceremonies in unregistered churches are risking prosecution.

Uganda laws state that marriages may be celebrated in licensed place of worship by reorganized minister of the church or anybody to which the place of worship belong s and the church leader will not celebrate marriage if impediment nor without license.

 

A compendium of the laws related to marriage in Uganda states that no clergy man on Holy orders shall be compelled to solemnize the marriage of any person whose former marriage has been dissolved on ground of his or her adultery.
