Jinja Town clerk arrested for embezzling 1.7 billion shillings

The former Jinja Municipal Town Clerk David Bashakara has been arrested over alleged embezzlement of public funds. Bashakara was arrested on Friday evening from his country home in Mbarara by the detective attached to the office of Inspectorate of government.

He is accused of falsely accounting for 1.7 billion shillings he received from the Uganda land commission as property tax while still serving as a town clerk of Jinja municipal council in 2008.

He allegedly embezzled the money together with three other municipal officers who were recently arrested by IGG but granted bail after being charged.

The three include Jinja municipal engineer Dansan Muhumusiriya, municipal environmental officer, Earnest Nyabihanga and the municipal engineering assistant Mr. Michael Kakonge.

The IGG spokesperson Ali Munira says Mashakera is being held at Mbarara central police station a waiting charges of false accounting. Munira says Bashakara is to appear in court on Monday for the charges he has denied.
