Kadaga elected Vice Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians

The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament Rt.Hon. Rebecca Kadaga seems to be having a great year of her life. Kadaga has been elected the Vice Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians.

Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga who was scheduled to discuss a paper on Women as agents of Change is currently attending the 57th CPA Conference in London, United Kingdom.

Her election comes at a time when the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association marks 100 years since its founding as the Empire Parliamentary Association at a July 1911 meeting of British Parliamentarians and Members from five dominion Parliaments at Westminster.

This year the conference has attracted Members from nearly 170 Parliaments and Legislatures in the nations, states, provinces and territories of the Commonwealth who are to discuss issues under the theme of “Reinforcing Democracy”.

During the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Steering Committee meeting, Rt.Hon.Rebecca Kadaga was elected as the vice Chairperson to deputize  the Speaker of Dominica Rt.Hon.Alix Boyd a positing that runs for two years.

This is also a special year that marks one hundred years since the celebration of women’s day commenced.

The conference is to look at measures of increasing the participation of more women in leadership positions, so as to realize that Commonwealth Parliamentarians stand as equal partners with a shared commitment to the common goal of advancing parliamentary democracy through the development and sharing of best practices.

During the meeting the Chairperson pointed out that Parliamentary democracy is all about evolving new processes to meet the challenge of change through engaging all people in the development and implementation of solutions shared at CPA forums.

Accepting her election as CWP Vice Chairperson, Rt.Hon.Kadaga, guaranteed her support to promote the values of women parliamentarians especially in the commonwealth by initiating strategic programmes to see that the percentage of women in leadership increases.

The Speaker is also the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (Africa Region).

Speaker Kadaga is attending the conference with MPs Seninde Rosemary, Sylvia Sinabulya, Hood Katuramu and Elijah Okupa.
