East Africa Community urged to solve common market loopholes

Uganda export promotions board executive director Florence Kata has said protectionism among the east African member states is hindering the success of common market.

Speaking to the press in Kampala, carter said countries think national when it comes to the board level contrary to the political diplomat and the technical level where discussion of things around the implementing the East African community trade facilitating protocols.

Kata noted that protectionism hidden behind factors like standards, hygiene, documentation and compliance with the rule of origin in terms of manufactured items as non tariff barriers giving a favorable opportunity to one’s own country.

She says these issues need to be looked into so that goods are free to move from on EAC member state to another so that traders can benefit from the increased market of the EAC.
