Makerere University Students petition Parliament over Mabira forest giveaway

Students of Makerere University students are planning to petition Parliament over government plans to give away part of Mabira Forest.

Under the Forestry association and Tourism Association, the students want Parliament to halt the process, after President Yoweri Museveni recently revealed plans to give away part of the forest to SCOUL for sugarcane plantation.

The Association’s President, Hillary Ssegawa says they are drafting a petition that will be handed over to Rebecca Kadaga on the 28th of this month.

Ssegawa says they are concerned that it might become a trend for government to allocate natural resources like forests to other investors.

He also challenges Mehta to reconsider the importance of the forest than sugar production.
