Parliament says Mabira forest giveaway reports are hearsay

The parliament of Uganda has said that Mabira forest give away reports that have hit headlines of different media in Uganda are mere hearsay.

Speaking to the media inKampala, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah said that the issue has never been presented to parliament by the government for discussion.

He says that he has never sat in any forum to discuss matters concerning the give away of the said forest land.

 

Oulanyah says that parliament cannot base on media reports to respond on a matter that is of national importance.

Recently, President Museveni is said to have proposed to give away part of Mabira forest to Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) for sugarcane growing to combat the sugar crisis in the country.

The reported proposal has attracted wide condemnation especially from the opposition politicians and members of the civil society.

Musevini is said to have asked those opposed to his proposal to produce a clinical report that issuing part of Mabira forest is disastrous to the environment and the extent to which it will affect the environment.
