Civil society defend Ugandan teachers’ strike

Civil society organizations have added their voice to those urging the government to urgently consider the demands of the teachers and avert a loaming strike.

They say the government should not to ignore the issues raised by the teachers. The teachers under the Uganda national teachers union are demanding for the 100% salary increasing whereas government insists that they can’t afford the said salary demand.

Teachers had announced a strike starting Monday as schools resumed for the third term in spite government warning that all striking teachers will be terminated away from government pay roll.

The country director Action Aid Uganda Charles Musinje says government can cut some sectors and raise some money for the teachers’ salaries.

The parliamentary social service committee had proposed a 25% salary increase for the teachers’ this financial year.
