Justices Benjamin Odoki, John Tsekooko, Alice Mpagi Bahegeine resign, Uganda’s judicial system in shock now

We have learnt with sadness that the Deputy Chief Justice, Alice Mpagi Bahegeine has retired her duties because she has clocked the mandatory 70 years of age. Justice Mpagi was appointed Deputy Chief Justice two years ago.

Shocking information is that other justices Benjamin Odoki and Supreme Court judge John Tsekooko are also expected to retire this year.

The retirement of justices compounds the shortage of manpower in the Court of Appeal. For example Justice Mpagi has been part of the judicial bench and her retirement has reduced the number of Justices in the Appellate court to only five, although they are meant to be eleven.

The Secretary to the Judiciary, Ms Dorcas Okalany has confirmed this news break and said the Judiciary is hamstrung to execute its constitutional obligation of dispensing justice because of the incapacitating shortage of manpower.
