Tom Julunga death: Besigye promised to look after his kids, but kids are now out of school

This week we bring you the story of former opposition activist Tom Julunga. On 6th June 2009, Tom Jjulunga (who was also called Sula Kiberu) and a member of Forum for Democratic Change mobilizer was shot thrice in the stomach and later died on his way to Mulago hospital while his colleague, Mulongo Wasswa, who was a boda boda rider was stabbed to death and his body dumped in Busega, not far from the site where Julunga was shot.

Three years down the road, no official police report has ever come out to explain Julunga’s death. And what is surprising Ugandans most, despite the promises Col. Kiiza Besigye of FDC made at Julunga’s burial to assist the family of the deceased, all the four kids Julunga left have dropped out of school. Julunga left five kids four are in Rakai and one is at the home of one of the LC3 councilors representing Masajja C parish in Kampala.

During his death, Tom Julunga, was canonized as saint and martyr of FDC perhaps because he died 6th June 2009, three days after Uganda’s Martyrs’ day and three days to Uganda’s hero day.

During Tom Julunga’s last funeral rites, an overzealous political mourner compared Jjulunga to Dr. Andrew Lutaakome Kayiira of the Uganda Freedom Movement and a Democratic party stalwart. Kayiira was gunned down on 6th March 1987 and his murder has never been satisfactorily investigated.
