Police storms church service, tear gases bishop and believers

Police swung into action at Mbarara Independence grounds to disperse a meeting of Ugandans that was presided over by Bishop Zac Niringiye.

The police, according to eye witnesses kicked the bishop and asked him why he was not supporting the government in Power. The bishop looked on as the police dispersed all the non violent citizens who had come to listen to his address. The police reportedly swung into action as the bishop was winding up his address and interrupted the discussions that were meant to follow after the bishop’s address.

The meeting which was attended by all are local government councilors, chairpersons, some opposition leaders, religious leaders, some members of the businesses community and some members of the general public was peaceful but the police citing orders from above (president Museveni’s top leadership) arrived with anti- riot policemen and surrounded the meeting.

On seeing the police holding teargas canisters, guns and batons, the Bishop decided to call the meeting to an end. Other people who were in the meeting included Maj. Rwakanuma, Rev. Father Geatani Tibanyenda, and area members of parliament. The sources in police informed us that the bishop’s meeting was disrupted because the participants in his meeting had unanimously agreed on the need to restore term limits as suggested by Ankole elders who were in the meeting. President Museveni is against the restoration of presidential term limits.
