MPs want KCCA to take over Owino St. Balikudembe market

Parliament wants KCCA to take over the management of st Balikudembbe market commonly known as Owino due to internal conflicts in the market.

This comes after a group of women petitioned parliament saying that a group of about 100 people led by the presidential advisor on markets Godfrey Kayongo are planning to take over the market yet there are over 8000 vendors operating in the market.

The women also asked parliament to stop Kayongo and his group under their organization st balikudembe market stalls and lock up shop owners association [SSLOA] to desist from collecting market dues until a proper investigation is carried out.

KCCA is currently demanding over a billion shillings collected as market dues from SSLOA.

They have not remitted any money since March 2012.

The director legal at KCCA Michael Okua told the presidential committee of parliament that the vendors have made it difficult for them to carry out a vendor’s census in the market and the solicitor general also ruled that SSLOA should not pay any market dues.

He however says that KCCA is opposed to such opinion and is still negotiating with the solicitor general.
