Electoral Commission urged to improve on its integrity

The Acting commissioner, Uganda Human Rights commission Dr. Katebalirwe Amooti says although they recognize that the Uganda electoral commission has challenges, some of them beyond their control, little has been done to improve the handling of the election process.

He was speaking as Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate the international human Rights day. He says that the electoral commission is still failing to conduct just elections that attract citizen’s trust.

Dr. Katebalirwe says the poor handling of the elections has resulted into number frequent bye elections which have often been challenged in courts of law.

He adds that the failure to conduct a just election is violation of people’s political rights.

The commission is also asking legislators not to pass the public order management bill in its current form into law.

The bill is currently before parliament for debate.
