Why Uganda leads East and Central Africa in biotechnology?

Uganda has over 24 PhD level scientists, 50 MSc level scientists and over 100 bachelor level scientists. The Republic of Uganda has several specialists on major crops grown on African continent such as maize, banana, cotton, cassava, sweet potato, tomatoes and rich…..

The senior biotechnology policy advisor at ACTESA (Agency of the Common Market for East and Southern Africa), Getachew Belay says that Ugandan scientists working in the agricultural biotechnology leads their counterparts in Kenya, Rwanda, Burkina Faso,  South Africa, Zimbabwe,  Zambia, Swaziland, Malawi, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Sudan in agricultural biotechnology.

Getachew Belay says Ugandan legislatures, farmers, and policy makers in Uganda are good therefore East and Southern Africa would learn more on biotechnology from Uganda.

He says Ugandan scientists will be good for Regional- Level Risk Assessments once the COMESA Regional Policy on Biotechnology and Biosafety is released. Ugandan scientists recently also adopted the growing of Bt cotton…Bt cotton is cotton incorporated with the Bt bacterium in order to create its resistance against bollworm pest.
