Uganda to repatriate refugees

 

Uganda Government is to ensure voluntary repatriation of refugees to their home countries. Hillary Onek, the minister of Uganda for relief, disaster preparedness and refugees says that a tripartite meeting is arranged between the governments of Uganda, DR Congo and UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss steps for returning Congolese refugees back to their country.

Onek says Uganda has been sensitizing the Congolese refugees on the dangers of escaping from the settlement.

Due to instability in neighboring countries such as South Sudan as well as Somalia, refugees continue to flow into Uganda seeking for asylum.

There is a total of 374,539 refugees in Uganda of various nationalities. Uganda government is negotiating the voluntary repatriation of Burundian citizens back to their country.

Majority of the refugees in Uganda are of Congolese nationality, South Sudanese origin, Somalis, Burundians, Eritreans, Ethiopians, Kenyans and refugees from Central African Republic.
