We don’t need your legal services, LRA victims tell Ocampo

The victims of LRA activities have told the former prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Luis Moreno Ocampo that they don’t need his legal services.

Ocampo had offered to represent the victims of Barlonyo Massacre in the court. Barlonyo village in AgwengSub-county, Lira District is the place where more than 400 people were massacred by suspected Lord’s Resistance Army rebels.

A total of 301 people were buried at the memorial site in a mass grave. Ocompo told the survivors who gathered at Barlonyo to welcome him to Uganda that he wanted to be their lawyer. But one of the LRA survivors, Suzan Akim told Ocompo that she was not pleased with his offer.

“You whites give guns to rebels to fight governments and you turn round to change posts. It is you people from Europe and America who gave Kony guns to kill us and then you turn around to hoodwink us,” she said.

Ocampo was invited to Uganda by Children of Peace, an NGO supporting the vulnerable and victims of the Barlonyo in Lira District.
