Police explains why it tortures suspects

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga has defended police after human rights activists asked him to explain the reason police officers kill suspects, torture suspects and receive bribes from suspects.

Enanga was speaking at the public dialogue by the Uganda Human Rights Commission on the implementation of the Anti-Torture Act 2012 at Hotel Africana; in Kampala.

The latest report by the Uganda Human Rights Commission shows that the police lead violators of human rights in Uganda followed by the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces and the Uganda Prisons Service respectively. Enanga told human rights activists that Uganda police kill civilians only when its officers are provoked. He says “…police deals with suspects who are not co-operative. We tell them to surrender, but they don’t listen. Instead, they throw stones, what we do, we shoot…” Ends
