Ministry of Health declares Uganda Typhoid Free

TyphoidFollowing a serious outbreak of typhoid in Kampala and neighboring districts that claimed over 20 lives, the Ministry of Health has come out to declare Uganda typhoid free. The outbreak had prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a travel notice for those coming to Uganda recommending that travelers get typhoid vaccine before traveling and follow water and food precautions during their trip to help prevent typhoid.

The Ministry publicist, Rukia Nakamate, noted that the outbreak affected 14,300 people; among these females who were mainly affected and this compelled Government to set up treatment centers to take care of the outbreak. According to the Ministry the outbreak was due to consumption of unsafe water in Kampala and now Government recommends that the population only consumes water from national water and bottled water to keep the population safe from the disease.

In March 2015 Government launched an inter-ministerial committee to work in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Center for Disease control and UNICEF to cuwhich has developed a three-month, comprehensive response and intervention plan, that was expected to cost some 4 billion Ugandan shillings. Intervention measures include designating medical centers for treatment and retraining health workers to deal with the illness.
