The prisoners include 11 suspected Uganda Peoples’ Front rebels, ADF, some former LRA rebels captured at the battle front, DP and FDC supporters among others.

The government accuses some of the political prisoners of plotting to topple the National Resistance Movement government headed by Gen. Yoweri Museveni by force of arms.

Mao asks the government to release the suspects before 2011 polls. He argues that some suspects were lured by negative elements and others are innocent. Some of the political prisoners held at Luzira include Alex Okoti, a son to the late Lt. Gen. Bazilio Okello, Jimmy Oceng, Alfred Lubel, Francis Akena, Mike Odoi, Lt. Phillip Onekomon, Lt. Jimmy Oryem and Patrick Otim, a New Vision journalist among others. Mao recently denied being part of a group of Ugandans who want to remove President Museveni from Statehouse by force of arms.
