Blood shortage spills to regional hospitals

The shortage of blood in the country has reportedly spread to regional Hospitals. This follows reported cases of blood shortage in the central regional mainly Hospitals in Kampala because of the referral status and population.

The affected districts that are facing a high risk of mortality as a result of lack of blood include Arua,Gulu,Mbale and Kampala Hospitals.

Different Government agencies led by the Uganda red cross have launched a mass drive across the country to collect blood from donors to in a bid to save lives.

Irene Nakasiita from the Uganda red cross said that 170,000 units of blood are required to reach the targeted demand of   360,000 units to sustain the whole country.

She says the shortage is as a result of many Ugandan’s and patients who need blood to survive.
