All the government hospitals and health centers in Uganda have been directed to publish monthly lists of essential drugs they needed in a move meant to avoid drug stock outs.

The hospitals and other health facilities will be required to send their lists to the National medical stores every 30 days to allow timely deliveries and stocking of drugs.

The State Minister for Primary Health Care, James Kakooza who also denied before journalists media reports of drug shortages in the country said the government doesn’t want to hear reports of shortage of drugs in the country’s health facilities.  

There were media reports in recent weeks of severe drug shortages across the country especially contraceptives, anti-malarial drugs and ARVs.  

Kakooza told journalists that the drugs are readily available in National Medical Stores and blamed the shortages at some hospitals and health centers on late requisitions for the same.

The minister says that the government will ensure that diversion of public drugs to private clinics and hospitals stopped.
