NRM concedes defeat in Mukono north parliamentary by-election

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government has conceded defeat in yesterday’s parliamentary by-elections in Mukono North.

The NRM candidate in the race, Peter Bakaluba Mukasa says his main political rival; Betty Nambooze of the Democratic Party won Tuesday’s elections.

Bakaluba thanks all people of Mukono North who unsuccessfully voted him.

He tells journalists that in politics losing elections is part of the game.
Nambooze defeated Bakaluba by over 1,800 votes.

The Electoral Commission declared the Democratic Party’s candidate the winner last night.

Nambooze got 16,142 votes.  Bakaluba got 14,302 votes. The invalid votes totaled 663. There were 157 poling stations. There were six other candidates in the race including Matthew Talemwa, Charles Jjingo, John Ssebunnya, Zimula Mukwanya and Zirimala Kiggundu. These stood as independents.
