Applications are provided for the Doctoral Scholarships Awarded for Studies at a South African University.

Conditions Governing the Award of the Carl & Emily Fuchs Foundation Doctoral Scholarships and Application Process Guidelines

Eligibility:

The Fuchs Doctoral Scholarships are available to post-graduate students who have already, or intend to register for Doctoral studies at a local South African university. Only South African Citizens are eligible to apply.

Fields of Study:

The scholarship is awarded in any academic field of study/Doctoral program formally registered with a South African university.

Scholarship Value : R50 000 per annum.

Tenure:

The scholarship is awarded for a period of 2 years, of which the second round is payable based upon satisfactory academic performance (based on the submission of a progress report and as motivated/substantiated by the Promoter of the student).

Selection Criteria :

The scholarship is awarded based on the following selection criteria:

  • Academic achievement/excellence (a minimum requirement of a Masters degree, passed with distinction or 75% average)
  • Economic merit (preference will be given to economically deprived applicants).

Applicants must also be willing to be interviewed by a selection panel in November 2010, during which qualities of intellect, leadership, character, social skills and merit of the proposed study/research project will be assessed.

Conditions:

The scholarship is awarded for full-time Doctoral studies only. Applicants will also be required to enter into an agreement, confirming his/her undertaking to apply the benefits of their studies/research outcomes as part of a career based in South Africa for a minimum period equal to the tenure of the scholarship.

Application Process:

Application forms are available from each local university’s Postgraduate Student Aid/Financial Assistance/Bursary/Scholarship Office. The application form should be accompanied by a copy of the student’s identity document, a photograph, a formal academic record of all previous studies, 2 referee reports, confirmation of acceptance for the Doctoral study/program and an Executive Summary of the proposed research project/study.
