Prices of sweet potatoes have gone up in different parts of the country, especially in Kampala due to limited supply.

The quantity of sweet potatoes coming to Kampala has greatly reduced following the landslides, floods and prolonged droughts in some parts of Uganda. A bag of sweet potatoes is currently selling at 90,000 from 50,000 shillings last month.

The chairperson of St. Balikuddembe (Owino) market, Godfrey Kayongo Nkajja says their traders are now getting sweet potatoes only from Buganda region following the recent floods and prolonged drought that hit the areas outside Buganda.

He says the prices of sweet potatoes may increase further because Uganda’s sweet potatoes are sold to countries including Rwanda, Kenya and Sudan.

Kayongo however says the prices of tomatoes; pineapples and cassava are low because the supply of those items is in plenty.
