The President of the People’s Progressive party, Jabeli Bidandi Ssali has criticised the government for moving quickly to arrest opposition leaders for protesting “unfair economic” situations” in the country, instead of solving those situations.

Bidandi says the opposition was justified in protesting the high cost of living as seen by rising food prices, and transport costs due to high fuel prices.

He says the government should move quickly to address these concerns which are affecting all ordinary Ugandans instead of concentrating on arresting opposition leaders who are sharing the “people’s plight”.

Bidandi was speaking on Monday at Nakawa police Station where he had gone to see Democratic Party President Nobert Mao who was arrested in Ntinda as he walked from Ntinda to his office in Kampala. FDC President Dr. KizzaBesigye was also arrested and later charged in Kasangati magistrates court, while Mao was charged in Nakawa Magistrate’’s court.

Several other opposition Members of parliament were also arrested as they walked to their respective places of work.

The opposition today staged a walk to work protest in which many opposition leaders were arrested for walking to their places of work. The Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura said they had intelligence that the opposition planned to disrupt business in the city.
