Betty Nambooze sent to prison over Uganda walk to work protest

Outspoken Mukono North Member of Parlaiment, Betty Nambooze has been sent to prison for allegedly leading a walk to work protest in Mukono.

The Magistrate’s Court in Mukono has remanded Nambooze to Kawuga Prison after refusing to grant her bail over past experiences. She was arrested this afternoon for participating in a walk to work protest in Mukono.

Several other opposition leaders were arrested and have been granted bail in different magistrates courts, some like Nandala Mafabi and Maj. Rubaramira Ruranga being forced to get bail after they had refused to apply for bail.

The police and the army today swung into action to stop several opposition leaders from walking to their places of work as part of protests against high fuel and commodity prices.

The police insists that it is illegal for members of the opposition to walk to work without police permission while the opposition insists they have every right to walk to wherever they want.

The police has arrested over 103 people engaged in Thursday’s walk to work protests, with a handful granted bail, while others will spend the night in prison.
