Kampala Lord Mayor Lukwago and other opposition leaders released after walk to work protests

Kampala Lord Mayor elect, Erias Lukwago and several other oppsotion leaders have been released on bail by different courts where they were arraigned by police after being arrested earlier today.

Erias Lukwago, the Lord Mayor of Kampala, FDC Vice President for Eastern, Salaam Musumba and several other politicians have been brought to Makindye Magistrate’s Court where they were charged with unlawful gathering, stopping traffic flow, and refusal to follow orders of a policeman in uniform. The Court then offered the politicians bail.

But that wasn’t after disastrous drama at the court where police and the army had to fire teargas and live bullets in the air to disperse a crowd of opposition supporters who had followed the arrested opposition politicians. The supporters wanted to forcefully evacuate the politicians.

Lukwago after release castigated the police and the army for holding people at ransom by taking away all their rights, including freedom of movement where some people can no longer be allowed to walk without police permission.

FDC head of Electoral Commision is reported to have been forcefully granted bail after the internationally renowned HIV/AIDS activist said he did not want bail since he had been arrested as he walked alone to his office.

Calm is returning to most parts of Kampala after violent protests in Bwaise, Kasangati, Kalerwe, Kajjansi and several areas following the arrest of opposition leaders who were walking to their places of work on the second day of walk to work and walk to pray protests.

Police has confirmed one person has died in today’s chaos and over 103 people have been arrested in the protested that spread from Kampala, Jinja, Ligazi, Mukono, Wakiso and Masaka.
