Media houses ask government for apology

The media houses in Uganda have asked government to apologize for the brutality the security operatives applied on journalists while taking videos and photos of the Forum for Democratic Change President Dr. Kiiza Besigye.

About 20 journalists were intentionally injured and cameras confiscated by security personnel while covering Dr. Besigye’s journey from Entebbe airport to Kampala on May 12. Besigye was being escorted by thousands of his supporters from Entebbe airport after coming from Kenya where he had gone for treatment after the government security forces had brutalized him on April 28 in the walk to work protest against the high prices of food and fuel.

The Uganda Media Development Foundation national coordinator, Mathias Mayombwe says that the President should summon the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura and the Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Aronda Nyakairima and warn them on the rude way their forces treat journalists.

Mayombwe told a meeting of journalists in Kampala that a report has been written that will be presented to the President to explain the grievances from the media.

Mayombwe says that government should give medication to the injured journalist, release all the media equipment confiscated and penalize those who harassed and assaulted the journalists besides a national apology.
