Government loses billions to a private rhino firm

The government of Uganda has lost unspecific billions of money in the Rhinoceros project since 2005.

The government, through the Uganda Wild Life Authority imported white and black rhinos from South Africa, Kenya and the US and stocked them at Ziwa ranch a private firm that belongs to Roy Ziwa.

For about six years the rhinoceroses have been in Ziwa ranch, both local and foreign visitors are paying sums of money but the government (UWA) is yet to get benefits.

The recent commission headed by the retired Supreme Court Judge, George Kanyeihamba has reported that the rhinos that were put in Ziwa ranch are in the same ranch but the ranch has changed the name to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

The report adds that Uganda Wild Authority (UWA) funds Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, trains and pays the workers at the sanctuary but the proceeds of the sanctuary are not remitted to UWA.

The report has caused suspicion that some UWA officials could have connived with Ziwa to defraud the authority of money through unscrupulous deals.
