NEMA to forcefully evicted 2000 encroachers who illegally occupied a wetland

Over 2000 traders who forcefully occupied the Lubigi swamp are to be forcefully evicted in joint operation commanded by national environmental management authority (NEMA), Kampala capital city authority and the area resident district commission.

The traders occupied the swamps located a long Nansana Bi-pass road last Thursday. They have since demarcated stoles claiming the land was given to them by President Yoweri Museveni as the members of Uganda volunteer patriotic association.

During the meeting chaired by managing director NEMA environmental monitoring compliance Waiswa Ayazika and Dr. Gerald Sahula acting Executive director NEMA say, it was resolved that KCCA law enforcement officers carryout the eviction under the supervision of police.

The vendors chairperson who at the same time the chairman of Uganda volunteers patriotic organization Richard Ruwama says they decided to occupy the swamp to prove the government that they wanted to work but nowhere to work.

Ruwama says they will move away if they are ordered by the government. By press time several people were seen rushing to Luyigi to erect stoles.

Dr. Ariyamanya Mugisha the executive director of NEMA says the encroachers must get out of the wetland or risk to face the law.

This is a third time NEMA is evicting encroachers on Lubigi wetland. In 2009 officers from NAMA and police displaced a witchdoctor named Bemba Musota before other group of people occupied the same swamp.
