Electricity supply to increase by 30% this year

The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has said the electricity grid will increase by 30 per cent in November.

The authority acting Chief Executive Officer, Benon Mutambi says the increase of power supply will be a result of the government increased investment in the sector.

He adds that 50MW out 250MW that will be commissioned from Bujagali dam in November will up the supply from 576 to 747.

Mutamba says that in April 2012 the 250 MW Bujagali dam power project will be fully completed and it will lead to the phasing out of the two thermal power plants which are expensive to maintain since they use fuel, resulting to high power tariffs.

He articulates that thermal power contributes 170MW to the national grid and if thermal power use is phased out Ugandans will start enjoying low tariffs. He says that the 600MW Karuma dam power project is about to start as 828.6 billion has already been allocated to it.
