Kiseka market vendors petition IGG over Rhino Investment LTD

Kiseka market traders and vendors have petitioned the inspectorate of general of government to investigate claims that Rhino investment LTD was given 14.9 billion shillings as a compensation for termination of its market contract to redevelop Kiseka market in 2007.

In their petition signed by their chairperson Abwooli Gerald Kobwemi the market vendors under their pressure group citizen Alert group accuses the Director of Rhino Investment LTD colonel John Mujenyi of conniving with some government officials to inflate the compensation fee from 6.8 billion to 14.9 billion shillings.

In May 2007 Kampala city council entered into partnership with Rhino Investment to redevelop Kiseka market at a cost of 1.59 billion shillings. The traders and vendors organized themselves and started several demonstrations within the city centre against this partnership saying since they were seating tenants, they should have been given first hand priority to redevelop their market.

Later president Yoweri Museveni in consultation with Attorney General terminated the construction lease of Rhino investment LTD and appointed a government value who advised that compensation should be 6.8 billion shillings.
