Challenges still exist in access to clean water

The Kabarole district Water officer Mugabi Pius has said that over 100 villages in the district don’t have access to clean safe water.

Speaking today during a media dialog organized by triple-s at St. Joseph’s Inn Virika, Mugabi said that the water sources in the district are not equitably distributed citing some sob counties where the clean water coverage is only at 40%.

The water officer however said that the district has over 900 water sources of different technologies and that according to the 2010 survey the water coverage in the district is at 84%.

Lydia Mirembe the communications and advocacy officer Triple-s Uganda said that over 9 million Uganda do not have access to clean safe water but share unprotected water sources with animals and are therefore exposed to water born diseases.

Mirembe who calls upon members of the community to own the water facilities and utilize them well. She has also challenged stakeholders to invest in the sustainability of the water sources since most of them break down a few months after construction.

Speaking during the closure of the dialogue the Kabarole district vice chairperson Moses Ikagobya called for a joint effort to ensure the equity distribution of water resources.
