Confusion looms on government land to resettle encroachers

The government has offered over two hundred million shillings to purchase land for resettling Encroachers of  the lubigi wetland along the northern bypass.

The government promised to find space for the people who claimed  to be army veterans and urban poor, who had occupied the place forcefully in may this year.

Police evicted over four thousand people had taken over 10 acres of the wetland  which is about five kilometers off Kampala City on the Kampala-Hoima road. The wetland shields northern parts of Kampala from flooding.

However the identified land along the Northern by pass is under dispute between the Grandson of the late king of Buganda Daudi Chwa, Prince Kimera Semakwokiro the owners of the land and one man who claims to have got the land from the lands department only identified as Mukalazi.

Prince Kimera Semakwokiro  who is the real owner of the land has warned  the government against dealing with Mukalazi because it will have bought very hot air.

The swamp takes water from River Nsooba, whose flood plain at Bwaise has been destroyed after years of reclamation to pave way for settlement.
